AG 1000: A True Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) for Cold Rooms
Cold rooms require ventilation, and until now, this has been a major problem for designers and engineers. Cold room ventilation used to be difficult and costly, requiring multiple pieces of equipment to do the job. Using innovative, award-winning technology, AirGreen, Inc., a Delaware-based CleanTech firm that we have teamed up with, BMIL has produced a single DOAS system to provide cold room ventilation.
The first of its kind, AG 1000 simultaneously cools and dehumidifies the air in a single pass to temperatures of 50°F (10 °C) down to 30°F (0 °C) while eliminating downtime related to multiple defrost cycles. In fact, this DOAS does not need a defrost cycle. This means we can now offer reliable make-up air refrigeration below freezing while providing significant energy savings. Because this is accomplished in a single machine, it lowers capital and operating costs.
This new system has won the 2024 AHR Innovation Award in the category of Refrigeration.

How AG 1000 Works
The AG 1000 has two modules: the refrigerator and the concentrator. In the refrigerator module, hot and humid outdoor air is passed across a super-chilled brine solution, creating cold, dry air. This chilled air is delivered directly to the cold room. In the concentrator module, hot refrigerant gas waste heat reconcentrates the diluted brine solution. This process is much more energy-efficient than other regeneration processes, resulting in a more sustainable DOAS. The AG 1000 owes its efficiency and superior performance to AirGreen’s patented multi-stage brine heat exchanger system and BMIL’s Frio Verde ® refrigeration technology.
This system also tackles the problem of cold room condensation. It dehumidifies the cold room by creating supply air with a 10°F (5 °C) dewpoint temperature suppression. This means the air that is delivered into the cold room is dry, so it will not form damaging condensation on your ceiling, walls, equipment, or products.
The innovative design of the AG 1000 surpasses previous DOAS systems, which is a huge relief for PE designers and building owners. Meeting codes used to be difficult and expensive, and this system makes it much easier and less costly.
Besides providing excellent cold room ventilation, the cold brine – hot brine cycle also scrubs the air of various particles and Biological pollutants, improving indoor air quality.
The Benefits of Installing AG 1000
This packaged heat pump make-up air refrigerator and dehumidifier provides many benefits, including:
- No defrost cycles are needed, the make-up air can run continuously
- It does not use natural gas or propane
- It is one piece of equipment, and no additional equipment is needed
- Ventilation air can be delivered directly to cold rooms (such as +2 to +8°C)
- It is energy-efficient, using up to 50% less energy than previous DOAS equipment
- It costs significantly less than previous DOAS equipment
- Operation is simplified because the refrigerated air travels along a single path
- HEPA filtration produces better indoor air quality inside your cold rooms
- It simplifies your PE’s design process
- It meets current ICC code and ASHRAE standard requirements
Who Can Benefit from this DOAS System?
The sustainable and cost-efficient AG 1000 is ideal for use in many different types of industries and facilities that have cold rooms, such as:
- Food manufacturers
- Pharmaceutical cold rooms
- Clean Rooms
- Laboratories
- Battery manufacturers
- Low humidity manufacturing site
- Indoor agriculture sites
